Trace the darts of a pattern

How to accurately mark darts on a sewing pattern?

When making a garment, accurately marking darts is an essential step to ensure a perfect fit. A poorly positioned or poorly marked dart can alter the cut and drape of the garment. Here are two simple and effective tips for easily transferring dart placements onto your fabric.

1. Cut out the dart placement on the pattern

A quick and effective method is to cut out the dart directly from the paper pattern.

How to proceed?

  • Carefully cut out the dart on your pattern following the designated lines.
  • Place your pattern on the fabric, positioned correctly.
  • Using a pencil or tailor's chalk, trace directly into the opening created by the cutout.
  • Remove the pattern and connect the marks to form the complete dart.

Advantages: Quick, precise, and no additional materials needed.

2. Use an erasable pen for temporary marking

Another practical solution is to use a heat-erasable or water-erasable pen.

How to proceed?

  • Place your pattern on the fabric and lightly pierce the dart reference points with a needle or pin.
  • Slightly lift the pattern and mark the points with an erasable pen.
  • Connect the points to accurately draw the dart.
  • After sewing, a simple pass with an iron (for a heat-erasable pen) or a wash (for a water-erasable pen) will make the markings disappear.

Advantages: Clean, precise, and no risk of leaving permanent marks.

Disadvantages: Always check that the pen you use erases well on your fabric before marking all your pieces.

With these two techniques, marking your pattern darts becomes child's play! Whether you prefer direct cutting or pen marking, the important thing is to choose the method that suits you best based on your project and your fabric.
