Sewing Tip: How to Stiffen a Flowy Fabric for Easy Sewing

Sewing flowing fabrics like viscose, chiffon, or satin can be a real challenge. They slip under the presser foot, distort easily, and make cutting difficult. Fortunately, I have a simple and economical trick to help you tame these fickle materials: a cornstarch-based spray that temporarily stiffens the fabric, without damaging it!

🧵 Why use this trick?

By applying a thin layer of homemade starch, the fabric gains hold, becomes more stable, and is easier to cut/clean. Once your project is finished, a simple wash is enough to restore the fabric's original suppleness.

✂️ The stiffening spray recipe

You'll need:
✅ 0.5 liter of water
✅ 1 teaspoon of cornstarch
✅ A clean spray bottle

👩‍🍳 Preparation:

  1. Heat the water in a saucepan (without boiling it).
  2. Add the cornstarch, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  3. Let cool, then pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

🏵️ How to use it?

  1. Lay your fabric flat.
  2. Spray lightly over the entire surface and let air dry or iron with a gentle iron to speed up drying.
  3. Sew as usual: your fabric will be easier to handle!

💡 Bonus tip: This trick also works to give a little hold to hems before sewing.
